Dr. Alireza Zali, President of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, highlighted the importance of AI in Iran’s pharmaceutical sector, urging a proactive approach to leverage this technology.

Dr. Zali underscored the need for Iran to take pride in its pharmacists and pharmaceutical industry, which have achieved significant milestones in healthcare. He noted that Iranian pharmacists have reached heights of national self-reliance through scientific confidence, always prioritizing quality without bias.

Despite challenges such as liquidity shortages, currency fluctuations, and the need for industrial optimization, the pharmaceutical industry continues to advance. Dr. Zali emphasized the importance of bioequivalence studies, stating that scientific and academic research enhances global marketing success.

Pharma Companies-Universities Collaborations Drive Advancements in Immunology and Emerging Diseases

Dr. Zali pointed out that major pharmaceutical companies increasingly collaborate with academic groups for research and development. Even well-established companies seek to partner with universities for scientific advancements, especially in areas like immunology, new drugs, cancer, emerging diseases, and re-emerging diseases.

He highlighted the role of universities as catalysts for health changes, advocating for a collaborative roadmap to elevate Iran’s pharmaceutical industry. The dynamic nature of diseases, demographic shifts, and new medical needs necessitate a forward-looking approach in the pharmaceutical sector. Dr. Zali referenced emerging diseases such as Zika, SARS, MERS, and COVID-19, noting that these illnesses drive pharmaceutical needs. Since the beginning of the third millennium, several new diseases have emerged, necessitating a proactive pharmaceutical response.

Monoclonal antibodies represent a promising area for future pharmaceutical development, and Dr. Zali stressed the importance of increasing Iran’s contribution to this field. He also mentioned that Ireland, Belgium, India, Germany, and China are key players in the pharmaceutical industry, indicating a shift in global marketing dynamics.

Advocating for Enhanced Exports and AI Integration in Iran’s Pharmaceutical Industry

Dr. Zali called for enhancing Iran’s pharmaceutical export capabilities, emphasizing the significance of recombinant drugs and drug delivery systems. He projected that drug delivery will play a strategic role in the next decade, urging the industry to innovate beyond traditional methods. Nanotechnology and biotechnology should be harnessed to lead advancements in drug delivery. Dr. Zali mentioned that Shahid Beheshti University has a strong track record in drug delivery research, making it a reliable partner for the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Zali stressed the necessity of integrating AI into pharmaceutical practices to avoid falling behind globally. AI can streamline various processes from drug formulation to post-marketing surveillance (PMS), reducing the workload for pharmacists. He cited recent AI-driven drug developments for pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension as examples of AI’s transformative potential. Clinical trials, too, are set to undergo significant changes with AI integration.
