The use of behavioral economics interventions (BE) has a significant effect on the uptake of colorectal cancer screening, according to a systematic review-based meta-analysis. The study reviewed all published literature between 2000 and 2022 and obtained data from the PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. The primary outcome focused on the demand for colorectal cancer screening tests.
Quality assessments of the studies were carried out independently by two evaluators using the modified Jadad scale. The pooled effect size (odds ratio) was estimated using a random effects model at a 95% confidence interval. Data analysis employed Galbraith, Forrest, and Funnel plots, and publication bias was investigated via Egger’s test. All analyses were performed in STATA 15.
Impact of Behavioral Economics Interventions on Cancer Control
From an initial 1966 record, 38 were included in the final analysis. These studies involved 72612 cases and 71493 controls, with approximately 72% of the studies conducted in the USA. The studies exhibited high heterogeneity based on the variation in odds ratio, which was statistically significant.
The random effect pooled odds ratio of BE interventions was calculated as 1.26. This significant result suggests that health policy and decision-makers can enhance the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of policies aimed at controlling this type of cancer by using various BE interventions. However, the impossibility of categorizing BE interventions precluded a group analysis.
