In recent years, Iran has emerged as one of the top ten global leaders in infertility treatment, leveraging native scientific advancements to offer cost-effective and innovative solutions to a growing number of both domestic and international patients. This development marks a significant shift from the past when patients often had to travel to European countries for similar treatments.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has been acknowledged for making substantial strides in the field of infertility treatment, attributed largely to the vigorous efforts of knowledge-based companies and research-service centers. As per reports from the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), the country now attracts numerous foreign patients due to its competitive costs and high-quality services in comparison to other developed nations.

Iran’s Legislative and Research Advances in Infertility Treatment

A notable legislative framework supporting these advancements is the “Law on Supporting Family and Youth Population” passed on November 1, 2021. This law facilitates several incentives under the national policy to rejuvenate the population growth and ensures significant governmental funding for infertility treatments. In 2022, a substantial budget of 12 trillion Iranian Rials was allocated specifically for this purpose, with insurance covering up to 90% of treatment costs for infertile couples, highlighting the government’s commitment to combating population decline.

Iran’s progress in infertility treatments is also reflected in its research output. Dr. Abutaleb Saremi, a specialist in In vitro fertilization (IVF) and reproductive medicine, notes significant milestones in the country’s medical history. The first IVF baby in Iran was born in 1988, and by 1990, the first laboratory twins were born using IVF techniques. This pioneering work was foundational for future advancements and led to the establishment of the Royan Institute, a leading research facility in reproductive biomedicine, in 1991.

Iran Advances as a Global Hub for Infertility Treatment and Medical Tourism

The Royan Institute and other medical centers in Iran are at the forefront of advanced infertility treatments, including drug therapies, intrauterine insemination (IUI), IVF, and ICSI procedures. They also offer cutting-edge genetic screening and embryo selection techniques to ensure the healthiest outcomes for prospective parents. These comprehensive services are made possible through the indigenous development and production of diagnostic kits which significantly reduce the cost of infertility treatments for Iranian couples.

The effective cost and confirmed success rates of treatments have not only benefitted Iranian citizens but have also attracted patients from 164 countries, making Iran a hub for medical tourism. This influx of international patients has contributed significantly to the country’s economy, particularly through health tourism revenues.

Looking forward, Iran aims to continue expanding its capabilities in treating infertility, including the use of stem cells for treating conditions like early menopause and other uterine issues. These efforts are supported by a legal framework that ensures accessibility to advanced treatments, reaffirming Iran’s position as a leading nation in reproductive health and medical innovation.
