Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research’s Augmented Intelligence in Medicine and Healthcare Initiative (AIM-HI) Coordinating Center has granted funding to five healthcare organizations. These grants are supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and offer up to $750,000 to each organization to investigate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications in enhancing diagnostic decision-making.

Announced Grant Recipients Advancing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Healthcare

The grant recipients are Dr. Cesar Termulo, Jr. from Parkland Health, focusing on pediatric asthma care in safety net health settings, Dr. David Ouyang from The Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, specializing in identifying cardiac amyloidosis in diverse populations, Dr. Sivasubramanium Bhavani from Emory University, working on precision sepsis resuscitation, Dr. Fatima Munoz from San Ysidro Health, focusing on diabetic retinopathy screening, and Dr. Peter J. Embí from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, concentrating on AI-enabled diagnosis.

These projects, which will span three years, aim to advance AI and ML in healthcare. The AIM-HI Coordinating Center and Advisory Committee will provide support and share best practices. This initiative reflects Kaiser Permanente’s long-standing commitment to data-driven patient care and its vision to support diverse healthcare organizations in assessing AI and ML in different settings.
