The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) published two significant MedTech-related health technology assessments (HTAs) in their HTA Journal, which inform the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines in England. These assessments provide valuable independent research for health and social care decision-makers.

This study conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of all current ablative and non-surgical therapies for small hepatocellular carcinoma (≤ 3 cm).

Ablative Therapies for Early Hepatocellular Carcinoma

The evidence base for ablative therapies had limitations, with many studies being small and of poor quality. Some therapies lacked comparative studies. The study found that percutaneous ethanol injection and percutaneous acid injection were less effective compared to radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, and resection.

The uptake of specific ablative therapies in the UK seems more influenced by technological advancements and ease of use rather than robust clinical effectiveness evidence.

Promising Interventions for Hidradenitis Suppurativa According to Health Technology Assessments

A prospective 12-month observational cohort study with nested qualitative interviews and an end-of-study consensus workshop. The study evaluated five treatment options: pharmacotherapy, laser treatment (Nd-YAG or alexandrite), deroofing, and conventional surgery. Due to low participation, conventional surgery was not adequately characterized. The study highlighted the effectiveness of deroofing and laser treatment for hidradenitis suppurativa in the UK, establishing a network of ten sites for future randomized controlled trials.

Deroofing and laser treatment emerged as preferred interventions for future trials, compared with oral antibiotics or conventional surgery. These health technology assessments underscore the importance of rigorous evaluation in determining the efficacy and adoption of medical technologies, contributing to informed healthcare decisions and policy-making in the UK.
