Health-Related Quality Of Life In Long-Term Meningioma Survivors: A Comprehensive Review

Meningiomas account for approximately 25% of all primary brain tumors and, despite a relatively favorable prognosis where around 92% of patients live beyond five years post-diagnosis, survivorship issues, and high disease burden can significantly impact their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The focus of this comprehensive review is the synthesis of evidence on HRQOL in meningioma survivors over long-term survival, defined as two or more years post-diagnosis.

A systematic literature search was conducted using databases like Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science Core Collection. The inclusion criteria comprised published, peer-reviewed articles offering primary quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods data on the physical, mental, and social aspects of HRQOL in meningioma survivors. The findings were interpreted using a narrative synthesis method.

Impact on Health-Related Quality of Life in Long-Term Meningioma Survivors

Out of 2253 unique publications found, 21 were included in the study. Out of these, 15 utilized a quantitative methodology, four used mixed methods, and two were qualitative reports. The survival range of patient samples varied from 2.75 to 13 years. Across all domains, impairment in HRQOL was observed.

Physical issues such as persistent symptoms (for instance, headaches, fatigue, vision problems) were identified. Mental challenges included emotional burden (such as a high prevalence of depressive symptoms and anxiety) and cognitive complaints. Social challenges comprised role limitations, social isolation, and affected work productivity. However, due to heterogeneity in the studies, the impact of treatment on long-term HRQOL remains uncertain.

The review underscores areas of HRQOL that can be impacted in long-term survivorship for patients with meningioma. These insights could aid in increasing awareness among clinicians and patients and facilitate the provision of support.
